The excited first-time mommy is scheduled to give birth this year. She has prepared herself for this pregnancy and is very conscious of her diet. The moment of truth came..her beloved baby is "not so perfect". What went wrong?

Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder. It causes the body to make fewer healthy red blood cells and less hemoglobin than normal. Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein in red blood cells. It carries oxygen to all parts of the body. Thalassemias are caused by mutation of the globin chain. The mutated genes will be inherited from both parents, and unfortunately the baby will be the carrier of this disease. Couples need to be aware and get yourselves checked before any family planning.
