Energy (Calorie)
Food energy is the amount of energy in food, which is expressed calorie. Carbohydrates, fats, protein, organic acids and alcohol contain food energy, while fats and ethanol provide the greatest amount of food energy. Body needs fuel to enable the chemical and physiological reactions that undergo in the body. The fuel or energy that the body uses comes from the food and drink that we consume in our diet. Different individual require different amount of energy. Energy requirement is determined by energy expenditure. Therefore, estimation of the energy requirement should be based on the measures of energy expenditure, which include basal metabolic rate and physical activity. Basal metabolic rate is defined as the amount of energy expended while in resting condition.
